Launch of Inishowen Dedicated Suicide Bereavement Support Group

Posted on 15 Jan 2024

HUGG are launching a dedicated suicide bereavement support group in the region of Inishowen.

HUGG provides a free, non-judgemental, and safe space where people bereaved by suicide can share their experiences and feelings and receive and offer support to each other. All HUGG support groups are led by trained volunteers with lived experience of suicide loss. Bereavement by suicide shares characteristics with other bereavements but it is also different. Being among others who understand this grief can bring comfort, hope and in time healing; for some it can be lifesaving. HUGG focuses on “postvention”, a specific form of intervention which is provided after a suicide in recognition of the increased risk of suicidal ideation among the bereaved family, friends, and community.

Inishowen locals, Kathleen Doherty, Paul Grant and Mary Friel have trained with HUGG to facilitate the NEW suicide bereavement support group which will be based in Buncrana. We hope that the group will greatly benefit the local community and the surrounding areas including those living in Carndonagh, Moville, Greencastle, Ballyliffin, Burnfoot and Muff. The support group will initially take place monthly, with the first meeting on Tuesday, 6 February, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. It is necessary to register with HUGG in advance of attending the support group. Anyone wishing to join HUGG Buncrana, or learn more, can simply register their interest online at www.hugg.ie, and a member of the HUGG team will be in touch, or email support@hugg.ie or call 01 513 4048 (monitored answering machine).
