Role Overview
The Oncology Nurse Coordinator will play a key clinical role within Cork ARC, ensuring the effective assessment, triage, and coordination of supportive care services for individuals affected by cancer. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will apply nursing expertise to guide clients toward appropriate interventions, liaise with external healthcare providers, and uphold best‑practice clinical standards across the service.
Key Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment & Triage
- Conduct nursing assessments for clients to identify physical, psychological, and practical needs associated with a cancer diagnosis.
- Utilise clinical judgment to triage clients and recommend suitable therapies, supports, or onward medical referral where indicated.
- Monitor clients presenting issues and escalate concerns to medical providers as required.
Coordination of Clinical and Supportive Services
- Working closely with both the Director of Services and Services Coordinator, ensure seamless coordination and delivery of Cork ARC’s clinical support services.
- Participate in the evaluation and development of evidence‑based supportive care pathways.
Medical Liaison & Communication
- Liaise with GPs, hospital oncology teams, allied health professionals, and other relevant medical personnel regarding clients needs and care continuity.
- Provide accurate, relevant clinical information to clients and their loved ones, supporting informed decision‑making.
Support & Supervision of Volunteers
- Guide and support volunteers involved in client's interactions, ensuring clinical boundaries and best practices are maintained.
- Debrief volunteers following challenging clients encounters and reinforce safe, appropriate responses.
- Assist in volunteer onboarding, particularly around communication, boundaries, and responding to distress.
Clinical Governance & Safety
- Promote adherence to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain a clinically safe environment.
- Respond to accidents, incidents, or clinical concerns in accordance with the Health & Safety Act 2006 and Cork ARC procedures.
- Participate in the development of policies and protocols aligned with current evidence-based cancer care.
Organisational Responsibilities
- Support administrative functions related to clinical services, including documentation, data collection, and service planning.
- Assist with volunteer rostering to ensure adequate clinical coverage.
- Act as an ambassador for Cork ARC, representing the organisation with professionalism and clinical integrity.
Professional Education & Experience
- Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current registration in good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
- Minimum of 5 years post‑registration experience, ideally including oncology, palliative care, haematology, survivorship care, or a related clinical speciality.
- Postgraduate qualification in Oncology, Palliative Care, Psycho‑Oncology, or equivalent (or willingness to undertake same) is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical assessment, triage, and care coordination, preferably within a multidisciplinary or community‑based setting.
- Strong understanding of the cancer care continuum, including treatment modalities, side‑effect management, and psychosocial impacts of a cancer diagnosis.
- Experience liaising with hospital‑based oncology teams, GPs, and allied health professionals to support continuity of care.
- Previous involvement in supportive care services, patient education, or facilitation of group programmes is an advantage.
- Experience working with, supporting, or supervising volunteers is desirable.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate clinical documentation, adhering to governance standards, and contributing to service development.
