Participation Charter for Older People Published
Older people are a growing proportion of Ireland’s population, with a wealth of experience to contribute, as active members of the community. But too often, they feel excluded from decisions that directly affect their lives.
As part of our work to build a stronger voice for older people, Age Action and the Irish Senior Citizens’ Parliament are pleased to publish the Participation Charter for Older People, with the support of Community Foundation Ireland.
The Charter is a practical framework designed to strengthen the meaningful, inclusive and sustained participation of older people in the decisions that affect their lives.
Developed following a national consultation that received 764 responses from older people across Ireland, the Charter is founded on ten principles of meaningful participation.
It is a practical tool which can be used by community groups, NGOs and charities, public service organisations, policymakers and others, to ensure that older people’s voices are heard, valued and reflected in decision-making.
Three resources are now available:
• The full Participation Charter
• A concise, brochure-style summary
• The accompanying Research and Evidence Base
The documents provide practical guidance for organisations, explain the evidence informing the Charter and offer reflective questions to support its application in practice.
“Older people should have a right to participation when decisions are made that affect their lives. They have a lifetime of experience, and a willingness to contribute to build a better Ireland to grow old in. This Participation Charter is a practical ‘how to’ guide to make the voices of older people heard.”
The project was commissioned by Age Action and the Irish Senior Citizens’ Parliament, supported by Community Foundation Ireland and facilitated by Mosaic Social Impact.
