Human Services Manager Skills - HIQA compliant management/leadership training for non-profit managers

Calling all newly promoted managers or those aspiring to such roles, this short leadership/management course is for you!

Starting in October, this microcredential is a QQI Special Purpose award, worth 20 credits. It is also compliant with HIQA standards that require managers to possess accredited management qualifications. The new course is called:

 Certificate in Human Services Manager Skills.

Microcredentials are gaining popularity all the time because they are seen as delivering distinct skills that help people build their repertoire of professional skills that enhances their work practices and also enhances their CV. People see them as building blocks that can quickly form a substantial body of expertise.

Upskilling in this microcredential course meets the need for:

- suitably qualified managers within the Human Services sector

- a learning environment where their tutors can impart their own frontline knowledge

- managers and aspiring managers, as students, can discuss real world issues with their peers

 

The learning objectives of the first module, Key Management Skills, are to:

  • Identify and discuss key issues in managing staff.
  • Explain productive ways to manage the relationship with their manager.
  • Relate the characteristics of group development and group dynamics to their own team.
  • Discuss how they manage for increased motivation to improve performance, including Supervision.
  • Give examples of the common causes of conflict in human services.
  • Outline strategies for dealing with conflict.
  • Explain the employment legislative background and approaches to the design of a staff roster.

 

The learning objectives of the second module, Managing Service Quality & Safeguarding, are to:

  • Define quality and explain how service quality relates to customer expectations in human services.
  • Differentiate between a quality service and a quality system.
  • Identify the key elements of a quality system.
  • Evaluate the key factors involved in implementing a quality system in a human service.
  • Discuss the role of the frontline manager in creating a safeguarding culture.
  • Relate how safeguarding contributes to quality service provision.
  • Discuss the key areas where today’s human service manager should audit to ensure quality service delivery.

Fees:

The OTC is now offering a special price of only €645 instead of the previous price of €790 for this HIQA compliant microcredential course. Students may request an invoice if their employer is funding the course. If requesting an invoice, please ignore the payment page at the end of the application process.

Please note that a student may withdraw from a course and re-enroll in a subsequent course and any previously paid fees will be fully credited to the student. However, there is also an administration fee of €49 in place which must be paid before the student returns to a subsequent course.

 

Course Entry Requirements:

To apply you must be either 23 years of age when you apply, or have successfully completed a Leaving Certificate/QQI/FET Level 5 Certificate.

All applicants must be currently working in the human services, community or not for profit environment for at least 10 hours a week and need to be able to apply their learning to an appropriate work setting.

International applicants must provide appropriate documentary evidence of proficiency in English (i.e. IELTS cert and a score of at least 6.0, OR have already completed a third level qualification at level 6 or higher studied through English).

Click this link and choose Apply Online black button. Then choose the CPD courses area option from the first drop down option. You can then choose the ‘Human Services Manager Skills cert – 6-10-25’ course from the second drop down menu option.

 

Input your details within a 15-minute time limit. Please ignore the Second level education request and the References request.

Input personal details into our system, add your supporting documents to your application, and proceed to pay the once-off €645 course fee (if you are being funded by your employer, you may ignore the payment page and email a request for an invoice from the OTC).

 

You will need to attach photographs of your supporting documents so please have them ready before you start your application. They are:

  • Copy of your photo ID (drivers licence or passport photo page)
  • Completed Employer Verification form
  • Completed one-page Personal Statement

Please also have your PPS number ready to input. Please be advised that there is a 15-minute time limit to complete your online application.

 

The application deadline is September 29th, but please apply early in case your application is incomplete and needs revising.
