Exploring the Potential of a Wellbeing Framework in Ireland - 2 Nov

Posted on 13 Oct 2020

The Programme for Government proposes to go beyond focusing on economic indicators as signs of progress. The government will develop and implement wellbeing indices that show how individuals and communities are faring in education, health, and housing, and likewise, will incorporate intended outcomes in these areas into public policy.

A number of other countries have pursued the implementation of a wellbeing framework. They have done so through following the recommendations of the 2009 Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress (Stiglitz Commission), and of national experts as well as public consultations.

Our panel below will discuss the potential of a wellbeing framework for Ireland, especially in a period dominated by economic and public health crises. They will debate what this framework should consist of and its limitations in affecting change.

As the OECD notes, there is a risk that indicators become sidelined in framing policy and as a policy priority, perhaps especially during a recession.

A Zoom link will be released to all registered attendees closer to the event.

Panel Members:

  • Joe O'Brien, TD, Minister of State and Community Development
  • Dr Peter Doran, School of Law, Queens University Belfast
  • Jennifer Wallace, Head of Policy, Carnegie Trust UK
  • Paul Ginnell, Director, European Anti Poverty Network Ireland.

Chaired by: Dr. Michelle O'Sullivan, University of Limerick, TASC Board Member
