Ecclesiastical Advice - Summer School Closures

Posted on 27 May 2026

Paul Collins, Risk Services Manager at Ecclesiastical Ireland says: “Periods of school closure — especially coming up to the summer holidays — can create a range of operational and safety risks for schools and educational settings.

Unoccupied buildings can become more vulnerable to issues such as water damage, theft, vandalism and maintenance-related incidents, particularly during prolonged closures. It is important that schools take practical preventative measures to help protect both their property and the wellbeing of their wider school community.

We would encourage schools to ensure regular inspections of buildings are carried out where possible, and any security or fire alarm systems are fully operational. Clear communication with staff, parents and service providers is also essential in helping minimise disruption and ensure a smooth return to normal operations in the event of an incident.

At Ecclesiastical Ireland, proudly part of the Benefact Group, we understand the unique challenges faced by schools and educational organisations, and we remain committed to supporting our customers with practical risk management guidance and specialist advice during periods of uncertainty. You can find more information on our offerings at https://www.ecclesiastical.ie/.
