Peer advocacy practice supervisor

Peer Advocacy in Mental Health is seeking the services of someone who can provide practice supervision for its mental health peer advocates.

Initially, the supervisory services will be trialed over a six-month period, subject to review.  You would be expected to deliver the supervision remotely, approximately 40-50 1 hour sessions over the six-month trial period.

Essential criteria

You must have:

  • Indemnity to provide supervisory support and services to peer mental health advocates
  • Experience providing supervisory support and services to people operating in the field of mental health
  • A good working knowledge of advocacy support services, the role and function of practicing advocates in the area of health
  • A good working knowledge of the role and function of experts by experience providing peer support in the field of mental health
  • A relevant qualification demonstrating sufficient competencies and ability to provide supervision to practicing peer mental health advocates 

Desirable Criteria

It is highly desirable that you demonstrate that:

  • You have self-experience of mental ill-health
  • You have used statutory mental health services
  • You have personally delivered peer support within health services

In the role as practice supervisor, you must demonstrate the capacity to:

  • Be person-centred
  • Frame your support within a learning and supportive environment
  • Act as an empowering tool that contributes to practicing staff’s appreciation toward the value of their role
  • Encourage personal responsibility and accountability
  • Be seen in the context of personal and professional development
  • Actively encourage staff to use this time to raise any concerns or challenges to their own peer advocacy practice specific to their interactions with advocacy clients
  • Ensure that work is performed to an acceptable standard and that practicing peer advocates comply with Peer Advocacy in Mental Health Policies, Procedures, Protocols and the Peer Advocacy Code of Practice
  • Establish clarity and transparency on the ethical and moral commitments to peers when delivering peer advocacy to same
  • Enhance the quality of service delivered by PAMH’s practicing advocates
