What is the Harkin Summit?

Under the stewardship of US Senator Tom Harkin (retired), co-sponsor and co-author of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act, the Harkin Summit attracts global leaders to discuss disability employment, challenges and barriers faced, share best practice and challenge for change at macro levels. Senator Harkin acts as an advisor to the Biden/Harris administration.

The Department of Communities is leading Summit planning and delivery alongside a diverse Project Board membership with representation across central and local government, local and international NGOs and employers of the Valuable 500. Those with lived experience, and a Disability Advisory Panel ensure the voice of those with disabilities is core.

With an overarching theme of ‘‘Disability: Shaping, Growing and Driving Economic Change’, the Summit offers a clear focal point for advancing corporate diversity, equality of opportunity for disabled people and global economic change. The Department for Communities is keen to ensure a world leading delivery, whilst also securing a legacy within the disability employment landscape.
