Time: 8.30am to 10.15am

Drinkaware would like to invite you to our Spring Research Breakfast Briefing, where we are delighted to have Dr Oliver Bartlett, Assistant Professor with the Department of Law, Maynooth University present at the event.

Talk title: Using the law as part of a comprehensive alcohol strategy

This presentation will examine the extent to which the law can be used as part of public health strategies that aim to reduce alcohol related harm. It will first review the relationship between law and other tools of public health governance including behaviour change constructs and the evidence that supports the use of various legal interventions. It will then identify the legal frameworks that these interventions must be compatible with, and illustrate the types of argument that must be presented to defend interventions that are challenged under these frameworks.

Speaker Biography: Dr Oliver Bartlett joined the Department of Law in August 2018, having previously lectured at the University of Liverpool (2015-18). He studied law at Durham University, from which he obtained PhD (2012-16), MJur (2011-12) and LLB (2008-11) degrees. Dr Bartlett conducts research in the fields of public health law and European Union law. He has particular interests in alcohol regulation (on which he is currently developing a monograph), the role of law in addiction and non-communicable disease policy, health policy at EU level, the tools of public health governance, and public health ethics. He is currently a member of the Editorial Team of the European Journal of Risk Regulation, and an alumni and former deputy director of the Law and Non-Communicable Diseases Unit at the University of Liverpool. He teaches Public Health Law, European Union Law and Legal Research Methods at Maynooth.
