Consciousness, Conflict and Climate Change – Creating Safe Ecologies for Change

Free Zoom Webinar, Tuesday 24 January, 7.00pm – 8.30pm

It is often said that the first and most important gift of human life is consciousness.

It stands to reason really because if you don’t have consciousness then you can’t be conscious of the fact that there might be something more important than consciousness in living a life!

So if consciousness is the first gift, then the second thing that came along shortly, if not immediately, afterwards was conflict! A non-stop and often vicious struggle to survive the vagaries of life and all it throws at us and the worst of all forms of conflict – relationships with “other people”, either individually or collectively.

It was only when Darwin came along many thousands of years later in the middle of the 19th century that we could understand why all this conflict and competition takes place.  You see it’s a jungle out there (and possibly “in there” as well) and Nature always selects the best competitor and so it really is a matter of survival of the fittest.

Or is it?

In Conflict we become Conscious of the differences we have with the other party and so we develop what we call a Conflict of Interest/s – either with other people and especially with Nature. It is a bit bonkers when you think about it to regard something that gives you food to eat, water to drink and air to breathe as some kind of adversary, and then proceed to undermine the ecology that provides those things that are essential for your survival to do so!

In conflict we tend to use the “wrong” Consciousness to try and solve the problem.  This inevitably makes matters worse because the wrong Consciousness makes us Competitors in a Contest that only one party can win but often in fact both parties end up losing.

For example, we think we can Control and Conquer the forces of Nature by Consuming and abusing its gifts.  And whilst there may be short term benefits, the long term negatives far outweigh any such benefits.  For example, burning fossil fuels made the Industrial Revolution possible but has massively contributed to the issue of Climate Change.

Therefore, in developing successful strategies for dealing with Conflict we need to change the focus from trying to Change or Conquer the other party and shift the consciousness towards creating a Safe Ecology where we can Change the Climate for the benefit of all the parties in that particular relationship.

In this Webinar we shall be looking at the key principles involved in Creating Safe Ecologies together so that the Consciousness can move from Causing and Continuing the Conflict to Collaborating around Creating a Climate for real and Constructive Change.

This Webinar forms part of a series on Sustainable Relationships and Resolving Conflict but it is not necessary to have attended any previous Webinars as they are designed as stand-alone events.
