Irish Research Council Launch New Funding Call

Posted on 9 Jul 2018 Last updated on 6 Aug 2018

The Irish Research Council has launched Coalesce, a pilot call under a new fund for research that addresses national and global societal challenges.

COALESCE builds on and brings together two former Council research funding programmes, namely Research for Policy and Society, and the New Horizons Interdisciplinary Research Call. The new call seeks to fund excellent research addressing national and European/global national challenges as set out in the challenge frameworks now in place. The Call is run in partnership with a number of government department and agencies, who fund or co-fund specific strands.

COALESCE will consist of a number of strands including:

  • a national challenge-based strand;
  • specific strands in partnership with government departments;
  • an interdisciplinary strand requiring a lead AHSS (arts, humanities and social sciences) principal investigator (PI) working with a PI with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) background addressing global challenges focusing on Strategic Development Goals identified by the UN; and
  • a strand in partnership with Irish Aid whereby the lead PI will work with a PI in one of Irish Aid’s partner countries (Africa, Vietnam and Palestine).
