Update on the Charities Bill
In July 2022, The Wheel made a joint submission with Charities Institute Ireland and Mason, Hayes, Curran on the General Scheme of the Charities (Amendment) Bill 2022, published by the Department of Rural and Community Development. We were then invited in September to speak before the Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands.
The Joint Committee published their report in November 2022 and its recommendations are being considered by the Department. The Bill is currently being redrafted, and it is hoped to have an amended Bill ready for publication by beginning of the summer with an intention to introduce it into the Dail. The Bill is priority legislation and the hope is that it completes its journey through the Oireachtas to enactment as quickly as possible.
