Ecclesiastical Ireland Urges Schools to Prioritise School Building Safety Ahead of New Term

With schools across Ireland preparing to welcome students and staff back after the summer break, Ecclesiastical Ireland is encouraging school leaders and caretakers to carry out some simple checks to make sure buildings and grounds are ready for the return to full use.

Paul Collins, Risk Manager at Ecclesiastical Ireland, said:

“The start of a new school year is a busy time, but it’s important that building safety doesn’t get lost among the preparations. Schools may have been empty or operating at reduced capacity over the summer, so taking some time to walk through the premises and identify any issues before students return can make a real difference.

“Start with the basics. Check classrooms, corridors, stairs and entrances for damage or trip hazards, make sure lighting is working properly and inspect outdoor areas, paths and car parks. Any maintenance issues that have developed over the summer should be addressed as soon as possible.

“Fire and security arrangements should also be checked. Make sure fire exits and escape routes are clear, alarms and other safety equipment are working as expected, and staff are familiar with the school’s emergency procedures. Schools should also review their risk assessments and Safety Statement to make sure they reflect any changes to the building, equipment or how the premises will be used during the new term.

“With pupils, teachers, parents and visitors all returning at once, the first few weeks can be particularly busy. A relatively simple back-to-school check can help identify problems early and ensure everyone returns to a safe and well-maintained environment.”
