Governance and Compliance Officer

We are seeking a results-driven, detail-oriented Governance and Compliance Officer to join us on a six (6) month contract

AsIAm is Ireland’s National Autism Charity based in Blackrock, Co. The Role: 

AsIAm is seeking a results-driven, detail-oriented Governance and Compliance Officer to join us on a six (6) month contract to play a pivotal role in ensuring the charity’s adherence to regulatory requirements, safeguarding and data protection standards. The successful applicant will have technical expertise with a particular focus on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).The role will involve supporting the Head of Corporate Governance and Services in all governance matters and contributing to the charity's commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical practices.

Key Responsibilities: 

GDPR Compliance:  

  • Serve as the GDPR Compliance Officer, supporting the DPO with all GDPR-related activities within the organisation.  
  • Implement, and maintain ongoing development of GDPR policies, procedures, and guidelines.  
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure the charity's data processing activities comply with GDPR.  
  • Handle data breach notifications, coordinating with the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and reporting to the relevant authorities when necessary.  
  • Provide training support to staff on data protection issues.  

  FOI Compliance:  

  • In the event there was an FOI request, manage and respond to the request, ensuring all requests are handled in line with legal requirements.  

General Governance:  

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and best practice standards.  
  • Support the Head of Corporate Governance in preparing reports for the Board of Trustees and senior management on compliance and governance matters.  
  • Monitor changes in relevant legislation and the regulatory environment and recommend appropriate action.  
  • Conduct regular internal audits to assess compliance with applicable laws and regulations.  
  • Develop and deliver training sessions on governance and compliance topics for staff and volunteers.  
  • Assist with the organisation’s risk management register and supporting risk assessments.  
  • Ensure policy documentation in place and that they are operational and up to date.  
  • Maintain the schedule of policy updates.  
  • Lead out on the annual business insurance renewal.  

Stakeholder Engagement:  

  • Work closely with internal departments to promote a culture of compliance and good governance.  
  • Assist in the preparation and reporting to external regulatory bodies, as required.  

Key Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with Law, Business Administration, Compliance, or a related field is preferable. 
  • Professional certification in data protection or compliance is highly desirable. 
  • Proven experience in a compliance role, ideally within the charity or non-profit sector. 
  • Strong knowledge of GDPR requirements and FOI legislation. 
  • Experience in developing and implementing governance frameworks and policies. 
  • Ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely., adapting communication methods to a diverse range of stakeholders. 
  • High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism. 
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. 
  • Attention to detail and a thorough approach to work. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Proactive and solution-oriented mindset.

Contract Duration: 

This is a six (6) month fixed term contract.  

Salary and Benefits: 

Salary will align with Grade IV or V of the HSE Consolidated Pay Scale depending on the successful candidate’s experience. In addition, we offer:

Working Hours: 

The role is fulltime and working hours are typically Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with some flexibility around start and finish times. 

The role holder is required to have a degree of flexibility regarding working hours with the expectation of some evening and weekend work. 

Location:  

The role is based in AsIAm HQ in Blackrock, Co. Dublin.  Hybrid working arrangements can be facilitated in discussion with the line manager.
