The Workplace resolution programme

A pro-bono mediation and conflict coaching service just for The Wheel members helps resolve disputes among staff, volunteers, or board members without legal fees.

What is the Programme?

The Workplace Resolution Programme is a structured mediation process for members dealing with internal conflict. It offers access to an independent, trained mediator. This mediator helps those involved in a workplace dispute have a respectful, confidential conversation. The goal is to reach a mutually agreed resolution

Who’s Eligible?

  • Member organisations with an annual turnover below €250,000.
  • Disputes involving 2–3 individuals (e.g., board members, staff, volunteers).
  • The applicant must be in authority (Board chair, board member, senior staff).

What is Mediation?

Mediation involves an impartial third party who helps those in conflict reach a resolution they accept.  Key principles of mediation include:

  • Confidentiality

  • Participants control the outcome

  • The mediator remains neutral

  • It aims for mutual understanding

  • It follows simple ground rules

  • Participation is voluntary

Any outcome can be written and signed as an agreement, though some may prefer a verbal agreement.

Benefits of Mediation

  • Quick and focused resolution

  • Private and confidential, respecting participant control

  • Restores relationships and builds communication skills

  • Generally successful, providing learning for the organisation

How the Mediation Process Works

  • Initial Meetings
Each participant meets the mediator to clarify issues and agree on ground rules.

  • Joint Session
A facilitated discussion led by the mediator, ensuring neutrality. The mediator helps both sides understand the
issues and explore options for resolution.

  • Agreement Drafting
A written agreement summarising the resolution can be created and signed when agreed.

Most cases resolve in one guided session. Complex issues may need extra support, which could incur charges.

Scope & Terms

  • Mediation covers conflicts among employees, volunteers, or board members—not clients or service users.
  • The pro-bono service covers initial meetings and the joint mediation session.
  • Mediators volunteer their time; participants only pay for agreed travel costs.
  • Confidential research on the process’s effectiveness will be conducted. Participating organisations must engage fully with the research.
