This section explores the complex territory of managing a charity / community / voluntary organisation. In many ways, the challenges of managing a charity are very similar to managing a small/medium enterprise in the private sector. However the fact that the "bottom line" is not financial profit begs the question for the nonprofit of "what does success mean for us?". Your group will need to know the answer to that so that management process and systems can guide the organisation towards success. An additional key differentiator to the private sector is is the fact that our boards, management committees etc are all voluntary and the balance between governance and management all that more challenging to manage.

This information is based on the Solid Foundations good practice guide for community and voluntary groups which can be downloaded here.
