I want to start a small charity and I was hoping to form an internet site that people can contact and give their support to. Do I have to register the charity which is volunteer based or can I just begin marketing it?

Hello Steve, When an

Hello Steve,
When an organisation is starting up it is important for the members to consider the
following points carefully:
  • Whether the organisation needs to have legal status
  • What activities are planned and what structure would encompass future as well as present activities.
  • Having decided on the structure the group will need to decide whether or not to apply for charitable status. There are advantages to having charitable status if at all possible but care needs to be taken with the definition of the aims and objectives as it is important to try and frame them to come under one of the four definitions of charity listed below. As this will simplify the process when applying for recognition as a charity.
I hope that helps.
Best wishes,

If I was you starting out I'd

If I was you starting out I'd go to Facebook first and establish yourself there.  I think it will be the fastest and most cost effective way to get your organisation's message out.

It will let you garner support without putting any effort into building something to let people communicate and if you can capture people's imaginations your network of friends will do the evalngelising work for you.

There's always opportunity to go setting up a website later.

That's my opinion, anyway.
