Win a Library worth €1,500 for your Community or Voluntary Organisation

There are so many things to love about reading a good book and so many reasons why reading is such an important pastime. Not only is it entertaining, enjoyable and educational, but books can inform, support, reveal and reassure in many different ways. Six in ten Irish people have a passion for books andreading and Bord Gáis Energy Book Club want to share this passion by donating libraries to community and voluntary organisations nationwide that would benefit from the addition of a library of books of their choice to support their work.

This new programme will be an ongoing programme that will see Bord Gáis Energy Book Club, Ireland’s largest book club, donate a library to a deserving cause three times a year, ensuring they can continue to share the joy and benefit of reading with the communities they work within.

How will it work?

Throughout the year, individuals and organisation can nominate themselves or a cause they really believe in to receive a donation of a library using the nomination form available on the Bord Gáis Energy Book Club. A judging panel will award a library to a selected organisation three times a year. The judging panel will consist of: Sinead Desmond, Presenter and Host of Bord Gáis Energy Book Club on Ireland AM; Gert Ackermann, Communications Officer, The Wheel and Emma Walsh, Books & Reading Programme Manager, Bord Gáis Energy.
The library package will consist of:
  • €1,000 worth of books
  • €500 worth of shelving and furniture
  • Expert literary advice on purchasing the appropriate titles for the organisation
  • Local support in setting up the library

Bord Gáis Energy Book Club, Ireland’s largest book club, will donate a library to a deserving cause three times a year.

Emma Walsh, Bord Gáis Energy Books and Reading Programme Manager, comments: "One of the things we have become really aware of through our work with libraries, authors and the book industry is the immense joy and benefit people of all ages get from the presence of books in their lives. Books may not be an essential requirement for anyone but they can be a really supportive and helpful resource for many people and genuinely bring a lot of pleasure to their lives. We’ve spent a lot of time working with libraries and bookshops around the country and have seen the impact books can have on a community. We’re really pleased to be able to offer charities and voluntary organisations that wouldn’t be able to afford a library resource themselves, the opportunity to get one free from us".
