Volunteer Ireland Calls for Nominations for Ireland’s Best Volunteers

Volunteer Ireland has announced that nominations are now open for the ninth annual Volunteer Ireland Awards. The awards were launched today in Dublin by RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan. The awards are open to volunteers of all ages volunteering in any part of the Republic of Ireland. There are nine different award categories, along with the prestigious Christine Buckley Volunteer of the Year award.

Speaking at the launch today, Nina Arwitz, Volunteer Ireland Chief Executive said: “Volunteers are the people on the ground in communities across the country. They teach salsa at the local residential home. They answer support lines. They sell you your raffle ticket at half time. They pick up litter in the town centre. No matter what happens, they are always there. Volunteers are the everyday heroes behind non-profit organisations across the country.”

“Volunteers give up their time selflessly for the benefit of others. They usually stay behind the scenes, never looking for thanks or recognition. These awards give us a chance to shine a light on the extraordinary efforts of volunteers in Ireland and recognise their commitment and dedication. We’re calling on members of the public now to take this opportunity to say thank you to their local volunteers, and to nominate an outstanding volunteer they know.”

Anyone can nominate a volunteer, and the nine categories are:

  • Arts, Culture and Media
  • Animals and Environment
  • Campaigning and Awareness Raising
  • Children and Young People
  • Community
  • Emergency & Ambulance Services
  • Health and Disability
  • Social Work
  • Sports and Recreation

Volunteer managers and coordinators, whether paid or unpaid, play a huge role in enabling volunteers. So this year we will also be awarding a special commendation for Volunteer Manager of the Year. Every nominee will receive a special ‘thank you’ card from Volunteer Ireland.

All shortlisted applicants are automatically eligible for the overall award. Nominations close at midnight on Sunday 16th October and can be made online at www.volunteer.ie. The Christine Buckley Volunteer of the Year award along with the nine category winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on  Wednesday, 7th December in City Hall, Dublin. All shortlisted nominees along with their guests will be invited to the ceremony to enjoy a much-deserved night of celebration.
