Bogus charity collector jailed

A drug addict who made a bogus charity collection with a forged Unicef card to feed his habit has been jailed for six months, reports The Evening Herald.

Charles Conroy (26) was caught approaching members of the public in Dublin city centre and asking them to sponsor him.

Sentencing the father of two, Judge Ann Ryan said it was a "mean" type of offence.

Conroy, of Ashfield Grove, Clonsilla, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a false instrument, under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.

Dublin District Court heard a plainclothes garda on foot patrol arrested Conroy in Westmoreland Street.

Conroy's solicitor said: "The offence was committed to feed a habit, a habit he has now done something about."
