Course details:

Charity regulation has a direct impact on everyone working in the Irish community and voluntary sector, requiring greater transparency and best practice from us all.

Inevitably, however, the buck must stop somewhere - and, in accordance with the Charites Act 2009, it is the Trustees / Governors of a charity that must ultimately take responsibility for the observation and enactment of key regulatory frameworks in their non-profits.

It is then the senior staff within an organisation who are responsible for implementing these standards on a day-to-day basis.

Clearly both groups need to be 'singing from the same hymn sheet', with a tight grip of the regulatory responsibilities and best practice requirements expected of them. This session, designed specifically for Senior Charity staff, will take participants through the governance and regulatory requirements for charities and the Senior Staff members' role in relation to them. There will be a particular focus on the implementation of the Governance Code.

Senior Staff Training Session (9.30am - 1.00pm)

This session will examine the following:

Understanding the key regulatory frameworks for charities, including an overview of the:

  • Charities Act 2009
  • Companies Act 2014
  • Lobbying Act 2015.

An introduction to the Governance Code, incorporating:

  • Beginning the process of learning, thinking and decision-making about necessary actions in relation to the Governance Code
  • Understanding the 5 Principles of the Governance Code
  • Understanding the value and importance of the Governance Code for their organisation and also for the community and voluntary sector.

Special Event Structure

Ensuring that all of the senior staff within your organisation are fully up to speed on what good governance actually entails is essential to the smooth and proper operation of every non-profit these days. Therefore a governance and regulation session aimed specifically at charity trustees has been scheduled for the previous evening. There is no need for an individual to attend both days.

The Wheel has carefully structured these separate evening and morning events to ensure that both trustees and senior staff are working cohesively and with the same depth of information and clarity on both sides..

Book your place now to make sure your nonprofit stays ahead of these important and evolving changes.

Feedback from Previous Participants of this Workshop:

"Taking the time - 2 days to explore the topics in depth was truly valuable. The materials provided, together with the promise of Power Point slides add significantly to the learning experience. The participants at such an event are always a valuable resource.  A really valuable workshop, thank you." - Liz Murphy, Pieta House

"I found the format excellent. It's a difficult subject matter to cover but breaking it into sessions helped. I found the financial details excellent. an opportunity for open discussion would be good if it could be facilitated at the end of the day." - L. Dempsey, Bessborough Centre

"Very worthwhile exercise in view of the new regulations governing all charitable organisations. I think more could be done to encourage charities to sign up to the new regulations and when a charity makes the transition at an early stage it will lead to gradual compliance." - S. Shevlin, Living Links

"Whilst taking two days out of the organisation can be difficult, it was worth it. It made sense to group all of these issues together, as it allows you to make the connections between things." - K. O'Sullivan, Cork County Childcare Committee

"A eye opener on SORP and charities legislation. I learnt a lot and it was great start out of the blocks towards getting on top of this stuff." - P. McCrystal, Human Life International Ireland
