Standard and Basic vews in Gmail

"Recently my google email won't open in standard view, but it will open in basic html. Why is this and what is the difference between these two views?"

Basic view is a slimmed down version of Gmail, with less features.  It's designed to allow people with old/esoteric web browsers still access Gmail.

Google explain it quite well here:

Standard view and basic HTML view

To see if your browser is on Google's buddy list, see this article, which lists all browsers which can do Standard View and those which must use Basic View.

Supported browsers

If your browser is on the supported list but will only do Basic view, it would be prudent to make sure it is updated to the latest version and if that doesn't work, reinstall the browser, or try a new one.

Maybe this is your opportunity to try out the brand new Google Chrome ?

Microsoft Office for Next to Nothing

"We are a small not-for-profit organisation with limited budgets. We are looking to purchase Microsoft Office (Small Business or Professional) and I have heard that it is possible, as a not-for-profit organisation, to buy it for as little as €7 (as opposed to possibly €400)! Can you advise us on this?"{mosimage}

It is true, you can get Microsoft Office, and a horde of other products for next to nothing, or more accurately, approximately 4% of their retail value.

{mosimage} Microsoft, Symantec and Cisco all operate a donations program which is administered in Ireland by non-profit technology consultancy ENCLUDE.  See this article for more detials:

Setting the Outlook spellcheck dictionary

"I use Microsoft Outlook for 3 e-mail addresses.  Where do I set the default dictionary for all outgoing e-mails?  As many times as I change it to English UK it reverts to English US!"

EMTS software costs

When looking at the costs of setting up your direct debits, do make sure to take into account the potentially huge benefits down the road

" I read a previous question about the need for Internet Banking & EMTS for processing direct debits.  Can you give me any idea of the cost of the EMTS software (we are with AIB) and t

Comparing low cost printers and scanners

This article is a continuation of the answer given by FoundryIT to the question:

"We are a very small organisation wanting to purchase a multi-function printer (colour, with fax, copier, scanner & a duplex facility). I understand that for running costs, laser is the answer but this would then have us paying €600-€1000 for a machine, which is really too much for such a small organisation. I have heard that the technology used in HP Officejet Pro L7480 makes it comparable to a laser printer on running costs but I don't seem to be able to find reviews of this product. Priced at around €200 and with all the required features it seems an attractive option. Can you advise on a multi-function printer that has reasonable running costs at a reasonable price?"

AIB EMTS software

There is no special software needed for the administration of money transfers and AIB's internet banking in general. It seems to be web based as is noted on the AIB's website.

Adobe 8 Pro files missing

"I am using Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. Recently it will not allow me to cread a pdf. I have tried running repair and have totally installed the software but it keeps giving me a message stating pdf maker files missing. Any suggestions?"

This problem seems to have surfaced since the release of windows vista. if you are trying to create a pdf from a microsoft office document and recieving the error "PDF maker files missing" it looks like the pdf maker macro is in the disabled list in Office itself.

Scanner query

"Hi can you advise me on the purchase of a scanner for the office. The previous one we had was a HP and lasted about 10 years. We would not have occassion to use it everyday but it would have use on a weekly basis. I would grade it as average to low usage."

Hi Sinead

You described your usage as  average to low, with this in mind it would be best to look for a home model as this would suit your needs. There dosn't seem to be a need to spend a lot of money on a scanner for this situation.
