This course covers the structure and function of the digestive system together with a full understanding of enzyme activity and the breakdown of foods. It also covers the following:
- Definition of Nutrition, Nutrients and Anti Nutrients
- Carbohydrates,
- Proteins and Fats
- The Role of Cholesterol/ Fats/Lipids/Antioxidants in the Diet
- The Role of Nutrition in Health & Current Dietary Recommendations
- Vitamin and Mineral Definitions
- Composition of Foods &Types of Refining Foods
- Nutrition and Exercise
- Nutritional Terminology & Food Labelling in Accordance with EU Regulations
- Recommendations for Dietary Requirements of Specific Individuals / Groups
- The Role of the Diet in the treatment of Diseases and Conditions of the Digestive System
- The Role of the Media in Influencing Diet.
Learners who successfully complete this module will:
- Be familiar with the composition of food
- Evaluate the nutritional content of food
- Understand the relationship between health and nutrition
- Interpret current dietary information and recommendations in accordance with the recommendations of the National Advisory Committee on Nutrition Education and the Department of Health
- Examine eating habits
- Be familiar with the nutritional needs of different groups of people
- Acquire a range of practical techniques.
Who should attend?
Preferred Entry Level: A Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
