Public Speaking

New dates TBC

Speaking in public ranks as one of the most common phobias, just after the fear of insects and the fear of deep water. Yet, for many delegates in the public service, speaking in public cannot be avoided. Whether it is giving a presentation in front of a small or large audience, directing and monitoring a team, giving a speech or answering public questions, speaking in public necessitates preparation and training.

To answer this often underestimated training need, Public Affairs Ireland Professional Development is organising a full day workshop, delivered by an experienced lead facilitator who is also a skilled actor and theatre-director. Methods used will be interactive in style using performance skills and a theatre-based approach, with lots of practical activities for participants. At the end of the seminar, delegates will have:

  • Explored the challenges involved in public speaking
  •   Identified the skills needed and have the opportunity to practice these skills
  •   Prepared, rehearsed and performed a public speaking task
  •   Gained confidence through individual feedback and coaching on their performance The    seminar programme includes:
  •   Physical warm up: how to prepare for and deal with nerves
  •   Preparing your voice: clarity and projection
  •   Breath for pace and control
  •   Working with speech mannerisms
  •   Best use of body language and gesture
  •   How and when to use notes
  •   Finding the words
  •   Practical content preparation
  •   Rehearsal: repetition, repetition, repetition
  •   Delivering the speech: individual feedback

This seminar has been designed for senior managers, team managers or staff members who need to speak in public as part of their working roles. Those who wish to develop their confidence or address a specific personal challenge in public speaking should also attend. All those with an interest in public speaking should attend. You will also benefit from the experiences of others in the public service. There is informal networking time during breaks and the lunch provided afterwards.
