This awareness programme explores suicide and self-harm in Ireland. By completing this session, participants will be able to: discuss the incidence of suicide; identify the risk factors and list the signs associated with someone who is thinking of suicide; outline a response to a suicidal person; be more aware of the services available to support people in distress and those who have been affected by a suicide.

Mental Health Ireland (MHI) is a national voluntary organisation which was established in 1966 as the Mental Health Association of Ireland. It is a company limited by guarantee with a voluntary Board of Directors representative of local Mental Health Associations and people with expertise in relevant areas.
 
There are 105 local Mental Health Associations currently affiliated to Mental Health Ireland. While they are autonomous, they share the mission of MHI and participate in projects organised at national level. Local MHAs are active in assisting to meet the mental health needs of the population of their own areas. MHI is affiliated to the World Federation for Mental Health and to Mental Health Europe. 
 
The activities of Mental Health Ireland include:
 
  • Supporting local Mental Health Associations in their work by providing information and training and through a network of Development Officers working around the country. 
  • Actively Campaigning and Advocating to improve national mental health policy and service provision.
  • Providing an Information Service on issues relating to mental health and mental illness through information fact-sheets, this website and directly by telephone, post and email.
  • Undertaking Research on mental health topics, such as the national survey on stress and the national survey on public attitudes to mental illness.
  • Organising Conferences, Courses, Workshops and Seminars on a wide variety of issues relating to mental health. MHI also promotes and co-ordinates activities to celebrate World Mental Health Day on the 10th October each year.
  • Developing Mental Health Promotion Programmes, including: 
  • The National Public Speaking Project for senior students in post-primary schools and colleges which promotes an awareness of the importance of positive mental health, while developing public speaking skills.
  • Mental Health Matters, a mental health resource pack for 14-18 year olds which addresses the issue of mental health in a realistic, relevant and age appropriate manner. 
Training experience and qualifications: 

All training courses offered by MHI will be delivered by senior staff of Mental Health Ireland and a team of MHI Development Officers.

Intercultural Awareness Training Course

This training is an introduction to intercultural communication, cultural diversity and migrant rights and entitlements. It is ideal for organisations who want to bring about institutional change, to improve and develop the way that they work, especially for those who have front-line engagement with people from migrant communities and would like to expand their knowledge base. The training aims to equip the participants with the necessary knowledge to work effectively supporting clients from migrant communities

The first full-day involves sessions on individual staff development as well as techniques enabling participants to devise tangible and implementable actions in their work-place.  It is a very interactive day with exercise based learning. Issues explored will include intercultural communication, layers of culture, stereotyping, and a deeper understanding of how migrants circumstances may affect their interaction with service providers.

The second day (half day) will explain the different categories of immigration statuses in Ireland and their corresponding rights and entitlements in terms of access to employment, education, social welfare, family reunification and application for naturalization.

The training will be delivered in collaboration with practitioners, caseworkers, our clients and other local community organisations. Specific training for schools, youth groups and service providers for young people is also available on request.
