Question

We are setting up a fundraising charity and are applying to the revenue for tax exemption before we start raising funds. We have been advised to have a solicitor help with this, a friend of ours who works with a solicitor is helping on this one. Is the above practice ilegal? Thanks, Phill

Hi Phill,

Many thanks for your query.

There is nothing in law right now that says that you cannot start fundraising from your friends and work colleagues etc and start putting the money in a bank. You don’t need to wait for any tax exemption. Please keep in mind that an organization has to have a CHY number for two years before it can qualify for eligibility from the Revenue Commissioners re its ability to attract tax-effective donations.

Kind Regards,

Eva
