Question

I want to fund-raise for a friend who is in the States getting treatment for arthritis. I would just like to do something individual like packing bags in a supermarket, collecting with a bucket in town, doing a fast, etc. Do you know where I would find out about the legality of this, or if I can just start, or if I need to register with someone? Thanks, James

The short answer to your

The short answer to your query is that you need to contact your local Garda station and get a permit to make collections on the street, but if you do it in a shopping centre, because it is on private property, you don't.  However, it might be polite to chat with the management about it first!

This is covered by the STREET AND HOUSE TO HOUSE COLLECTIONS ACT, 1962
