The Joint Consortium on Gender Based Violence invites you to join us for our annual Learning and Practice Day from 8.45am – 5pm on Wednesday, June 16th, at the O’Callaghan Alexander Hotel, Fenian St. (off Merrion Square), Dublin 2.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

The Joint Consortium on Gender Based Violence comprises Irish human rights, humanitarian and development organisations, Irish Aid and the Defence Forces, all working together to address gender based violence. Its overall aim is to promote the adoption of a coherent and coordinated response to gender based violence.

This year, the day will focus on demonstrating the links between Gender Based Violence (GBV) and the Eradication of Extreme Poverty and Hunger (MDG 1). The day aims to share learning and insights on how GBV related interventions are contributing towards the attainment of MDG 1 or the converse; how failing to address GBV curtails progress towards this goal. Importantly, the event is timed to coincide with this year’s UN high-level summit on the MDG’s.

Although aimed primarily at those working on GBV in development and humanitarian contexts, the day offers a unique opportunity for anyone with a professional or personal interest in GBV to gain a deeper understanding of the issue from leading practitioners.

Addressing the event will be:

Dr. Nata Duvvury: Dept. of Gender, Globalisation and Development, NUI Galway

Lina Abirafeh: GBV Co-ordinator for the UN Humanitarian Response, Haiti

James Okoth: FAO, Uganda

Gertrude Kabawzi: National Gender Co-ordinator, Concern Universal, Malawi

Dr. Julia Kim: Image Project South Africa/UNDP

Savio Carvalho: Demand Dignity Campaign, Amnesty International

Martha Nemera: Executive Director, Women Support Association,Ethiopia
