Malcomson Law Annual Conference on “Metal on Metal Hips – Medical Consequences & Legal Implications”
In Ireland, there are over 12,000 people with metal-on-metal hip implants and many are facing an uncertain future. On Saturday, 12th May at 12.30pm at The Gresham Hotel, Dublin, Mr Alister Hart, Orthopaedic Surgeon will speak on his forensic metal-on-metal hip implant storage facility which stores over 2000 hip implants which have had to be removed from patients in the UK and Ireland.
In August 2010, DePuy, a medical device manufacturer, recalled its metal-on-metal hip implant products because of the unacceptably high failure rate of the devices. It now appears from the most recently published data that this high failure rate extends to all metal-on-metal hip implant device manufacturers except that the problem appears to be taking longer to manifest itself.
Every year we host a conference on a topical medico-legal issue. This year the focus is on metal-on-metal hip implants and the consequences of these medical device failures. We have invited three high profile experts from the UK to speak on the conference topic. Their presentations will address concerns over the number of patients with metal-on-metal hip implants who experience severe tissue and bone damage, metal poisoning from the rubbing of metal-on-metal and have had to have their implants removed. The conference will also explore the long term health issues of cobalt and chromium metal poisoning.
