Artists for Civic Action

Using theatre to advocate for social justice and influence public policy

 Smock Alley Theatre, 2 December 2013 2.00-5.15pm

Smashing Times Theatre Company, in partnership with the Advocacy Initiative, is delighted to present Artists for Civic Action, an afternoon of discussion, presentations and a theatre workshop demonstration exploring how theatre can play a role in engaging with the world we live in.

Guest speakers are  theatre practitioners Mary Moynihan, Smashing Times Theatre Company; Idan Meir, Combatants for Peace Israel-Palestine; Chrissie Poulter, Trinity College  Dublin and Anna Visser, Director of the Advocacy Initiative.

In the words of Augusto Boal, the Brazilian Theatre Practitioner and founder of Theatre of the Oppressed “theatre is a weapon and it is people who should wield it”. In this event artists come together with social justice advocate organisations to explore the following:

  • Can theatre make the world a better place and promote social justice for all?
  • How can drama and theatre be used as a ‘weapon’ to advocate for social justice in Ireland and influence public policy?
  • What role can Theatre of the Oppressed and techniques such as legislative theatre play in Ireland to advocate for social justice and equality?

This event has been made possible through funding by the Advocacy Initiative.
