VAT Mistakenly Charged on Mobile Text Donations

Charitable donations made via text message are inccorectly being charged VAT, it has been revealed.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan made the revelation in the Dáil, in response to a parliamentary question made by Fianna Fáil Deputy Leader, Eamon O'Cuiv.

Although charitable donations are not subject to VAT, mobile phone providers have been charging VAT on donations made via text message.

The Finance Minister says that any fees charged by the telecommunications providers are outside the scope of Irish VAT and that the providers do not have the "technical ability" to distinguish between services liable to VAT and those exempt.

Minister Noonan said the phone providers are working to resolve the issue in the near future.
