Tesco Launches €1million Community Fund Initiative

Tesco Ireland today announced the launch of an exciting new initiative, Tesco Community Fund, which will see €1million donated annually to local good causes in the communities around each of its 146 stores throughout Ireland. TV presenter Kathryn Thomas was on hand at the Tesco Fleet St store in Dublin today to help launch the initiative and is calling on all local good causes in Ireland to get involved.

Every six weeks, each Tesco store will donate up to €1,000 (€500 in smaller stores) between three local good causes in its community. Customers will decide how the funding is shared by voting for their preferred cause in store. Up to 3,500 local good causes in Ireland will receive a donation through the Tesco Community Fund over the next year.

From today, every time customers shop in their local Tesco store, they will receive a token of goodwill to place in the donation box of the local good cause they would most like to support.   Every six weeks, the number of tokens is counted and up to €1,000 is distributed proportionally between three local good causes. The more tokens a local good cause gets the larger share of the donation they will receive.

Up to 3,500 local good causes will benefit

Tesco is today calling on customers, local good causes, charities, schools, youth and sports groups from across the country that could benefit from donations to get involved by completing a nomination form in their local Tesco store.

Commenting at the launch, TV presenter Kathryn Thomas today said, “It’s fantastic that Tesco is committed to donating €1million to local good causes in communities throughout the country and I’m delighted to support this initiative. Tesco Community Fund has the potential to make a positive difference to thousands of smaller local charities and community groups across Ireland and customers get to vote on the causes that matter most to them, which I think is brilliant.”

Henry Dummer, Marketing Director, Tesco Ireland said, “Our stores are at the heart of hundreds of communities across Ireland, and as a company we really want to positively contribute to each community in which we operate. We are delighted that through our Tesco Community Fund we will be donating €1million to local good causes across Ireland and that our customers have a say in how the funding is shared.

“We already work closely with community groups, charities and organisations through our 26 Community Champions across the country, our sponsorship of the Ladies GAA and our charitable support including Charity of the Year. Tesco Community Fund will enable us to do even more to support local communities and we are calling on all local good causes, community groups and charities to get involved by popping into their local store to complete a nomination form.”

Tina Roche, CEO, Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) commended Tesco Ireland on the launch of the Tesco Community Fund. “Today’s announcement demonstrates Tesco Ireland’s commitment to increasing its community investment. The availability of €1 million to community and charity organisations is particularly significant at this time given the decline in funding and tough circumstances facing the sector. We were delighted to recently welcome Tesco Ireland to BITCI, the network for responsible business, and we look forward to supporting and working with them on this agenda.”

The launch follows a successful pilot programme in six Tesco stores which ran from March to July 2014 and saw Tesco donate €22,000 to 50 local good causes including: Wicklow Hospice, Irish Guide Dogs, Greystones Community First Responders, Gorey Girl Guides and more.

Tesco store managers will be issuing an information pack to all nominated good causes to inform them about how the Tesco Community Fund works. It will also include helpful tips on how local good causes can maximise the promotional opportunity in-store to help generate awareness of their local good cause.

The Tesco Community Fund is just one of a number of programmes run by the retailer to support local communities and good causes. Tesco colleagues have raised over €13million for its charity of the year partners since 2001. Most recently Tesco colleagues have raised €2m for AWARE. Tesco’s 26 community champions collectively dedicate 20,000 hours to community work every year.
