Reversal of Decision to Gut Disability Benefits

There have been many painful and fundamentally unfair measures announced in Budget 2012, but perhaps the most prominent so far has been the announcement of severe benefit cuts and measures that were to be imposed upon young disabled people between the ages of 16 and 25. 

Well, now it seems that those particular cuts and measures are being reconsidered following the outrage that they have generated. Taoiseach Enda Kenny has already signalled a pause to the  proposal to increase the age of entitlement for new disability benefit claimants from 16 to 18.

Additionally, Minister for Finance Noonan has today said that the Government will now "revisit" the cuts that, if fully imposed will see a disabled young person aged 18-21 have their benefit payment reduced from €188 to €100 a week and to €144 a week for those aged 22-24.
