Community Growers Fund for Gardens and Allotment in Dublin

Do you have a green space lying idle? No money to do anything with it? Why not turn it into a community garden?

A new fund entitled ‘The Community Growers Fund’ established at The Community Foundation for Ireland is set to assist unemployed people by getting them involved in the development of community allotments or gardens. The fund which is being created by The Mount Street Club Trust (MSCT) will provide grants to groups who have the capacity to work with the unemployed and can provide space for the development of a garden. The Community Foundation which is an experienced philanthropic and grant making organisation is assisting in this part of the fund.

Grants ranging from €1,000 to €10,000 will be available to help establish new Community Gardens and also to improve existing ones. The scheme is targeted at helping unemployed people to give them the opportunity to learn a new skill and to become active within their communities. The Mount Street Club Trust (MSCT), an organisation which has a history of assisting the unemployed in the Dublin area has joined forces with The Community Foundation for Ireland and also ‘Grow it Yourself (GIY)’ who will provide expertise and advise for groups looking to develop a community garden.

The first round of applications closes on 29th October 2010. The Community Foundation will host an Information Event for interested parties on the 4th October. The services and expertise of GIY Ireland, a national network of gardeners’ groups will be engaged by The Community Foundation and will provide the project with a Gardening Expert. The Gardening Expert will be on hand to offer advice and assist applicants.

Applications will be assessed by The Community Foundation with the assistance of the Gardening Expert, who will visit the sites of shortlisted applicants to assess the suitability of proposed projects.
